Who Was Sr. Judy?

Sr. Judy was the beloved principal of St. Lawrence Martyr School for 18 years, from 1986 to 2004. Her ministry in elementary education gave her energy. She valued the wisdom in the simplicity and honesty with which children approach life. Quoting a kindergarten student, she said, "I am happier here, than I have ever been in my whole life!"

Benefiting from her fun-loving, happy, and hospitable spirit, the school honors Sister Judy. Her commitment to providing the best possible Catholic education while having fun at the same time can be further realized through the creation of the Sister Judith Peters Learning Commons, where all students can come to learn and share in the experiences of a loving God.


What is a Learning Commons?

A learning commons is a space that serves students with

  • collaborative work centers

  • independent learning stations

  • a library

  • a reading area

  • a resource center

St. Lawrence Martyr provides an inclusive learning environment that meets the spiritual and academic needs of every student. Our current resource program provides a variety of services to meet the diverse needs of our students. A learning commons would provide the space to further serve them, as well as all students. Students will be able to take advantage of the different spaces for collaboration with their peers, conducting research, reading quietly, or working independently. The resource center would provide a quiet environment for students to focus on learning in an individual or small group setting.
